CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Yasha Nydoorin
Age: Unknown; likely in her 20's
Canon: Critical Role
Canon Point: Campaign 2 Episode 89: "Lingering Wounds"
Character Information: Yasha @ CritRole Wiki
Personality: As a barbarian from the wastes of Xhorhas, whispered by those in the Empire to be ruthless heathens who would kill you before they talk to you, there are certain... expectations that one might have when looking at Yasha. Yasha says very little, choosing to let others do the talking when such things are needed, and her intimidating size, her manner of dress, and the weapons she wields give her the image of a ruthless warrior. And while Yasha may seem like that on the battlefield... off of it, she's a very different person.
First off, Yasha's stoicism... isn't all just an aloof attitude. Yasha talks very little because, in all honesty, she's not a very charismatic individual! She's an absolutely terrible liar, choosing instead to tell the truth, even if it would put her at risk - such as telling a high-ranking member of the Empire that she's from Xhorhas instead of somewhere else - than to attempt to lie and make a fool of herself. She more often than not just speaks her mind, even if what she says might sound bizarre to others, locks up when she's the center of attention, even the positive kind, and often stutters through her words when trying to talk to people.
Second, yes, Yasha is a very ruthless warrior while in the midst of battle. As a barbarian, her power comes from the rage and anger she feels, letting it fuel her attacks and causing her to shrug off damage that could seriously injure others while barely blinking. But Yasha's anger isn't the foaming, frothing, rabid rage like Grog before her; no, Yasha is almost controlled with her anger, still calculating and focused on her targets instead of sowing chaos with each step. Yasha is a protective force on the battlefield (fitting, considering she was a protector aasimar before falling) often putting herself between her party and the enemies to draw their attention away from those who can't take as much punishment as she can.
This is because, despite her stoic appearance, Yasha is a very caring individual. Under all those furs and muscles, Yasha has a very soft heart. She likes collecting flowers, does her best to have some kind of positive interaction with Jester's poor traumatized weasel to help him, and teaches herself how to play the harp in the crew's downtime. She's not exactly the best at expressing this sort of care - she's very awkward and stilted in her flirtations with Beau, and it takes some time for her to warm up to things like hugs and such - but deep down, it's that love that fuels her desire to stay with this ragtag bunch of misfits.
For all the good that she wants to do, though, Yasha is very much shackled by a sense of guilt as heavy as the world. Yasha's guilt is what moves her forward as much as it pulls her back; see, some time ago, Yasha fell in love with a woman named Zuala. Despite her tribe's tradition of arranging marriages, Yasha wanted to be with her, was willing to defy the laws set down by her people to secretly elope with Zuala. But... that happiness didn't last. They were found out, and Zuala was executed - and Yasha ran. Yasha is wracked with guilt, to the point where she fervently ignores her developing feelings for Beau because she feels like she's desecrating her oath to Zuala, to be her mate for life.
Her guilt over her wife isn't the only thing that drags Yasha down. During her time as a mind-controlled thrall of the cambian Obann, Yasha did terrible things. She killed many people, and almost killed some of her friends, including Beau. That is where her self-loathing would have hit its peak; as confirmed by Yasha's player, if Yasha's attacks had killed Beau in that fight, Yasha would have attempted to end her own life, so large was the hurt she was feeling. While this doesn't come to pass, thankfully, hints of this desire to be punished begins to show later. Yasha throws herself into a pit fight egging her opponent to hit her, to hurt her, and Yasha barely fights back. Yasha wants to be punished for the terrible things she was forced to do, and it takes a conversation from Caleb - another member of the Nein that understands the weight of guilt - to pull her away from such self-destruction. But at this point, Yasha still considers herself a very broken individual, and is starting to fight against these chains to heal herself.
